NHS STUDENT-ATHLETES SIGN NATIONAL LETTERS OF INTENT

Five Naples High School student-athletes made their college commitments on Tuesday, May 19th. The student athletes are:

Victoria Guerra has earned four varsity letters at Naples High School. She lettered as a freshman on the Golden Eagle soccer team and has earned three varsity letters on the NHS track team. (She would have earned four if she hadn’t been injured last season.) Victoria is one of the best sprinters in the history of Naples HS. As a 9th grader she earned the team’s Most Valuable Runner Award and as a 10th grader she was the recipient of the Outstanding Sprinter Award. (Track awards are tomorrow night and my guess is she’ll receive another major award then.) Victoria is also the holder of the 100 meter dash record at NHS with a time of 12.01 and a member of the 4 X 100 meter relay team that set the school record of 48.92 in 2013. In addition to all of that, she also earned the Naples High School Student-Athlete Award. Victoria will be continuing her track career at Jacksonville University, in Jacksonville, Florida. The Jacksonville University Dolphins are a NCAA Division I program that competes in the Atlantic Sun Conference.

Dante Hoppa also earned four varsity letters in his athletic career at Naples High School.  He lettered for three consecutive years (as a 10th, 11th, and 12th grader) in basketball and he also lettered in football this past season as a senior. As a junior, Dante was the recipient of the Most Valuable Player Award in basketball.  Dante also earned the Student-Athlete Award this past January. Despite being injured for much of his senior basketball season, Dante Hoppa will be continuing his basketball career at Maryville College, in Maryville, Tennessee. Maryville is a NCAA Division III program that competes in the Great South Athletic Conference. Dante plans to study accounting or statistics.

Mitch Lindheim has been a member of the Naples High School varsity baseball program for the past four years and he is a senior captain. Mitch also played freshmen and junior varsity football for the Golden Eagles. In addition to his athletic achievements at NHS, Mitch also has earned the prestigious Student-Athlete Award boasting a 5.114 grade point average. Mitch has signed a Letter of Intent to play baseball for Coach Randy Stegall at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida. Mitch is part of the 1st recruiting class of the new NCAA Division II athletic program at Embry-Riddle. (Coincidentally they are also the Golden Eagles.) Mitch is planning on majoring in Space Physics and Commercial Space.

Isaac Tiburcio is a rarity. He is a four year varsity starter and letter winner and in basketball at Naples High School. As an 11th grader he earned the team’s Offensive Player of the Year Award. This past season as a senior he led the team in assists with 12.6 per game and he earned the team’s Most Valuable Player Award. Like Dante Hoppa, Isaac will be continuing his basketball career playing for Coach Brady Lambert at Maryville College, in Maryville, Tennessee. At Maryville College Isaac plans to study accounting.

Sophie Wasmer has earned eight varsity letters in her athletic career at Naples High School. She is a four year letter winner in basketball and a four year letter winner in lacrosse. In basketball, Sophie was the recipient of the Most Improved Award as a junior and The Dave Walker Award as a senior. The Dave Walker Award (named after the long-time NHS head basketball coach) is presented annually to the senior on the team with the following characteristics: good student, leadership, great work ethic, physical and mental toughness and intensity. Sophie will be continuing her athletic career playing lacrosse at St. Leo University, in St. Leo, Florida. St. Leo teams participate in NCAA Division II and are members of the Sunshine State Conference.

PROJECT GRADUATION HELP NEEDED FOR THE CLASS OF 2015

Project Graduation is a very important event for all Graduates accross Collier County.  For those who are not familiar with this committee, it was formed 30 years ago after previous years of  injury and deaths of graduate students following graduation parties.  Since it's inception, there have been no graduate accidents in Collier County following the night of Graduation.  The YMCA plays host in a secured and safe enviroment.

This year is the 30th annual event and guaranteed to be the biggest one yet with all the renovations made to the YMCA.  The biggest draw will be the action packed activities such as Laser Battle, Bull riding, jousting, rock wall climbing and many others.  We have many venders that provide food and beverages all night long.  Drawings for Prizes, such as a car lease, $1,000.00 cash, and many others for those that attend (although we're still working on the car lease for this year).

Naples High is responsible for prizes at this event.  WE NEED VOLUNTEERS to work throughout the night or to take a shift.  Parents of Freshman or Sophmore students, individual or couples, Should really consider working as a committee chair and be willing to take up this event for next year. I will walk them through the process next year, although there is not much to it.  We are also in need of prizes, new and unused, that graduating seniors would want.

For more information please call Karen McDaniel at (239) 641-6614 or email her at kandrmcd@gmail.com.
